The Thornton Speaker DIY speaker kit is for anyone who wants to build their own Bluetooth speaker but would rather avoid designing a crossover and assembling amplifiers from scratch. You get the complete electronics and five matching speaker drivers, while you decide on the enclosure, materials, shape and appearance.
The kit is ideal for creative DIY enthusiasts who want to build something personal for the home. For example, you can build a compact cabinet, a wall panel, a column, or let a special project determine the shape.
At the heart of the kit is a 5-channel Class D amplifier with DSP, digital crossover and EQ. Each speaker driver has its own dedicated output, allowing you to connect the drivers directly using the supplied wires and connectors. The digital crossover distributes the signal between bass, midrange and treble, so you do not need to build or solder crossovers yourself.
The system consists of one 135 mm bass driver, two 78 mm midrange drivers and two 42 mm tweeters. Total nominal output power is 80 W.
Once your speaker is complete, you can play music via Bluetooth 5.3, a USB flash drive, microSD card, 3.5 mm AUX or coaxial digital RCA input. This gives you the option of wireless playback from a phone, tablet or computer, as well as a wired connection from, for example, a player or TV with a coaxial output.
USB and microSD support MP3 and WAV files from FAT32-formatted media up to 32 GB. You control source selection, volume and playback from the supplied five-button control panel or the remote control, which also includes mute and two EQ sound presets.
If you build two Thornton Speaker DIY kits, they can be connected as a wireless left/right stereo pair via TWS. This allows you to create a complete system with separate left and right channels.
You build the enclosure yourself, so it is not included. It is a good idea to test all drivers and connections at low volume before installing them. The amplifier board must be installed in an enclosed cabinet with free air around the cooling areas, and you must only use the supplied power adapter.
Enclosure, wood, screws, glue, damping material and tools are not included.
